"For we are God's masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." - Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
Christian used to love getting those Lego building kits, and he actually got pretty good at them. It didn't matter how many pieces there were, you just started with the first step on the instruction page. Then came step two, then three, and so on until the final piece was in place. From dumping the pieces out to clicking in the last block, it was always cool to watch the scattered parts come together into something amazing. Every time he finished one, I was always impressed.
Now, funny thing is, my grandson Bradley has picked up the same interest, but he's doing even more complicated builds! It's incredible how much more detailed and intricate the kits have become, but the principle is the same: one piece at a time, following the instructions.
This may seem like a simple illustration, but the message behind it is anything but simple. Too often, we sit and stare at the scattered pieces of our lives and can't figure out how they're supposed to come together. And they never really will, unless we go to the instruction manual.
God's Word is that manual. As Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." In other words, God gives us direction, but just one step at a time. Not the whole staircase illuminated. Just the next step.
We've all looked at someone else's life and thought, "Wow, how did they get from where they were to where they are now?" The answer is the same as with the Lego kits: start at step one and don't skip any steps. And what's the first step? Standing before Almighty God and saying, "I can't do this. I'm tired of trying to figure this out on my own." When we surrender control and begin following His instructions, that's when the pieces start to come together.
Even as skilled as Christian became with Legos, Bradley has surpassed him. Bradley's building skills and his ability to follow the instructions are impressive. Still, there are moments when even he gets stumped. And when that happens, Nana will ask the same question: "What step are you on?" They'll walk through it together, and sure enough, they find the step that was skipped or misunderstood. Once it's corrected, he's able to move forward.
Here's what I've learned: you can't build step ten if you haven't completed step three. You can't force pieces together that don't belong yet. You can't skip ahead because you're impatient with the process. The Master Builder designed this life with specific instructions, and every piece matters. Every step counts.
When I finish this Lego kit called life, I want to stand before God and hear Him say, "I'm impressed." Not because I figured it all out myself, but because I followed His instructions, one piece, one step, one lighted path at a time.
Like a master builder, God is piecing together something magnificent in us, but we must follow His steps.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." - Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
TODAY'S BATTLE ORDERS:
Open your Bible to James 1:22-25 and read it out loud:
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do it! Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do."
Now write down one specific instruction from God's Word that you've been reading but not doing. Not a vague principle—a specific command. "Love your enemies." "Forgive as Christ forgave you." "Give thanks in all circumstances." "Pray without ceasing." Whatever it is, write it down. Then do it today. Don't just read the instructions. Follow them. That's how the pieces come together.
WEAPON CHECK:
God's Word as Instruction Manual, You've learned to use God's Word as ammunition in Breaking the Cycle. Now learn to use it as navigation. The Bible isn't just for fighting; it's for building. It doesn't give you the whole blueprint at once, that would overwhelm you. It gives you one step at a time. One verse for today's battle. One promise for today's doubt. One instruction for today's decision. When you feel stuck, when the pieces don't seem to fit, when you can't figure out what comes next, open the manual. Ask God, "What step am I on?" His Word will light the next step. Not the whole path. Just the next step. And that's all you need.
CHECKPOINT:
Think about your life right now. Does it feel like scattered Lego pieces dumped on the floor? Be honest: have you been trying to build it without the instructions?
Where have you been skipping steps because they seemed too hard, too slow, or too uncomfortable?
Write this down: "God prepared good works in advance for me to do. He already knows how this builds. My job is to follow the instructions, one step at a time."
Now ask yourself: What's the one step God is showing me right now that I've been avoiding? Not step ten. Not the finished product. Just the next step.
Stop staring at the pile. Pick up the manual. Find your step. And start building.
